The DMV’s very own Wale is a 26-year-old rapper with one major-label album and a slew of critically acclaimed mixtapes under his belt. He’s also quickly made a name for himself as one of the most knowledgeable sports fans in the world of hip-hop. A former D1-AA running back, Wale has a particular knack for obscure football references (Ki-Jana Carter, Vai Sikahema, and Tim Biakabutuka have all found their way into his bars).
He also knows a thing or two about hoops. He’s used his rhymes to compare himself favorably to Jamal Crawford and Luke Ridnour, and even got Kevin Durant to speak on an interlude for his latest, Seinfeld-themed tape, 2010’s More About Nothing. The Vincent Yarbrough reference occurs at the tail end of the first verse of “No Soup”, taken from that same mixtape, as Wale harkens back to the one-time Nugget’s more notable tenure at the University of Tennessee to boast about his prowess with women: “They feelin’ me, so/They not feelin’ y’all, so/I volunteer every ten-I-see, Vince Yarbrough”. Dope.
