AGR’s 3rd Annual “Big Shot Bob (Rob)” Playoff Tournament

FTW

The playoffs are finally upon us. As per tradition, AGR is hosting its annual Big Shot Bob (Rob) Playoff Tournament. With a field of 13 participants, this year’s tourney should be a good one. Last year’s BSB(R) tourney had a close finish (Andrew Wise’s 51 beat out Chris’s 50, Jesse’s 49, and 12 other losers).

Despite a truncated season, I think the world was ready for the playoffs to begin. Well, that, and an end to teams resting star players and the abomination that was the 2012 Charlotte Bobcats.

To prime us for the festivities, I’ll run over some interesting story-lines…

In the East…

Can the Celtics keep up their post-All-Star defense?

Can the Bulls (continue to) survive without Derrick Rose, who is now out for the year with a torn ACL?

Can the Pacers make some noise?

And can the Heat get the first of their “not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7…” championships?

In the West…

Can the Dirk and the Mavs rekindle their playoff magic?

How will the Lakers fare without Metta World Peace?

Who is the bigger dark-horse, the Clippers or the Grizzlies?

Who is the bigger dog in the West, the Thunder or the Spurs?

There are plenty of other questions to be asked, but AGR will be sure to address those in future posts as the playoffs continue. For now let’s get back to the Big Shot Bob tournament. The rules are simple:

All participants make their predictions through the finals before the start of the first playoff games. Predicting the series winner is worth 5 points. Predicting the correct number of games in the series is worth 2 points (only if the series winner is correct). The winner will win a prize (TBD) and gets to either write a guest post on AGR or choose a future topic for a blogpost, even if it’s about the evolution of wingspan or history of headbands.

And the picks…

A couple of notes about this year’s picks…

-For the NBA champion, 7 people picked the Heat, 3 picked the Spurs, 2 picked the Bulls, 1 picked the Thunder. The Thunder will have a tough road, but not as hard as the Spurs in my opinion–they might be this year’s most underrated team in the tourney. Also, last year there were 7 teams picked as potential champions.

– On a similar note, Andrew was the only one with the Mavs in the Finals. In fact, last year there were 8 different teams predicted to make the Finals last year, as opposed to 4 this year. Will any of the underdogs prove us all wrong?

-The team most predicted to sweep a first-round series is the Pacers over the Magic (6 of 13 predicted a sweep; Jesse predicted a Magic upset). Interestingly, even though the Big 4 of the Bulls, Heat, Spurs, Thunder were all picked to win their first-round series (52 out of 52), only 5 of those 52 series were predicted to end in a sweep.

That’s all for now folks. Tune back in after Round 1 for a Big Shot Bob (Rob) Playoff Tournament update. Good luck to all participants, players and teams!
