It’s about that time of month. You know, that time where I constantly wear a special, highly absorbent fabric. And get irrationally emotional. It’s that time of month where I don one of my authentic jerseys and meltdown from joy overload!
Of course AGR Authentic Jersey of the Week(end) is supposed to be a weekly feature, but sometimes things come up that get me out of my writing-zone, you know, like wearing this LaPhonso Ellis jersey whilst imitating NBA Hangtime dunks on my bedroom mini-hoop.
Some might wonder, “Izzy, beyond ‘Phonso’s badass name, what inspired you to fork over inordinate amounts of money for these threads?” Well, readership, there are some facts about this jersey and L.P. Ellis that you might not be aware of.
Let’s start with the jersey. Authentic and autographed. There is a subtlety in the the way that the word “Nuggets” subtly resembles a Rocky Mountain. I also like the random color-assortment: navy, gold, and maroon. Off the top of my head, this is the only team in sports’ history with that color-combo. Can’t thing of any country flags with this color medley, either. And yet, it remains understated. (correction: Jesse reminds me that the Cavs had this combo as an alternate).
Understated, though, doesn’t describe ‘Phonso’s game. Drafted #5 overall out of Notre Dame, he came into the league as an athletic SF. His best season coincided with his best season as a shooter, averaging 21.9 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 2.4 apg while shooting 36.7% from deep.
But screw the stats. Check out this video of LaPhonso’s best career plays. At the very least, start watching with his dunk at the 0:45 second mark. Do it for ‘Phonso, man.
